A wedding ring pillow is a tradition that has endured more than a millennium. This beautiful, soft cushion should reflect your personal taste and style. Just as with wedding dresses, wedding ring pillows used to be white but are now found in many different colors and styles.

For centuries, exquisite pillows have been used to present crowns to kings and queens. The tradition then evolved as a symbolic way to present wedding rings via a ring bearer, usually a young child, as part of the wedding procession.

Browsing wedding sites on the Internet reveals wedding ring pillows in many colors made from a wide array of fabrics. There are pillows with glittery silk butterflies or with red ribbon roses. Many of the ring pillows are made of satin or velvet. A Zen-like pillow is made of fine silk brocade, another of lilac satin with alternating lilac and white organza stripes. Bows made of sheer organza and lacy ribbons are attached to many pillows.

If you are planning a theme wedding, consider the following examples for these themes.
  • Cinderella: in lieu of ring box, a miniature golden carriage holds the rings as it sits upon a white satin pillow.
  • Hawaiian: the pillow is made of woven lauhala (similar to coconut fronds) and topped with orchids.
  • Valentine: a heart shaped pillow with pink or red ribbons.
  • Beach: a sand or blue colored pillow decorated with pretty seashells.
  • Victorian: a pillow decorated with orange blossoms, sprigs of rosemary or hydrangea.
  • Christmas: an emerald green or silver pillow decorated with holly and berries.
Since the processional walk down the aisle can be a quite a long one for a young ring bearer, here are some tips that should help things go smoothly.
  • Use one of the many pillows that have ribbons for securing the rings.
  • Secure the rings to the pillow using long corsage pins if ribbons are not used.
  • Give the pillow to the ring bearer seconds not minutes before he heads down the aisle.
  • Consider securing fake rings to the pillow and give the real wedding rings to the best man to hold.
  • Use a pillow that has a ring box secured to it.
If you would like to secure a ring box to your pillow, glue it with hot glue to the middle of the pillow. A nest of sheer fabric, lace and ribbon may surround the box to disguise any glue that may show. Loops of ribbon with a rose or other suitable decorations can be glued to the box and its lid. NOTE: Do not to inadvertently glue the box shut.

Consider stenciling a pretty picture, your wedding date, or special words on to your pillow. You can incorporate items from your theme, such as blue birds on a Cinderella pillow. You can use templates form a craft store or downloaded clipart from WeddingClipArt.com.

When shopping for a pillow that will carry your wedding rings keep your mind on your budget. Some clerks will try to convince you that you should spend a certain amount for an extra special ring pillow. Keep in mind that there are many stores that sell wedding ring pillows, or you can borrow or make your own.
