Learning to Match Your Earrings to Your Overall Look

Jewelry, that ornamental wear that complements and enhances an overall look, is especially important on your wedding day. Wedding earrings surround your face like bookends; they produce that masterful balance of sparkle or color. Or, if not carefully selected, they dominate an entire clothing ensemble and draw attention away from the total picture.

There are several variables that will determine which earrings are right for you on your wedding day. They are the shape of your face, your wedding hairstyle, gown-type, necklace choice, comfort, and personal taste. And, with earring selections boasting shapes of hearts, rounds, buttons, squares, hoops, dangles and chandeliers, there are a multitude of choices available!

Take a Glance in the Mirror
The shape of your face is a consideration when selecting earring types, and face classifications seem to get more and more complex. Is your face oval, round, rectangular, heart-shaped, diamond-shaped, or triangular? Or, are you a combination of two or more face shapes?

Whichever category best fits your face, remember that no rule is written in stone -- if there is an earring type that you love, try it. If you like the look, you are set! However, generally speaking, button or cluster earrings are a nice accent for the narrow face, while square earrings often balance a very long face. Round faces may benefit from dangling earrings, as they draw attention away from the fuller form.

Match to Your "Do"
Hairstyle, too, is an important factor when choosing your wedding earrings. If you want your hair down in a natural, flowing look, you should probably stick to smaller post or clip-on earrings. Dangly chandelier earrings will probably get tangled in loose hair or not be noticed at all. If you have chosen an up-do, with hair swept up and away from your ears, a longer, more dramatic earring may be just the right choice.

Chandelier earrings, also known as shoulder dusters, are stunning and chic, and may look lovely with nearly any hairstyle. Often seen on the earlobes of the stars as they walk on red carpets, chandelier earrings are dramatic and come in a variety of lengths and styles. Although the more traditional-minded may remind you that earrings should not hang lower than your jaw line, remember that the most important factor in deciding what works best for your wedding day is your personal preference. Do what feels right.

Let Your Gown Decide
If you have a very intricate and ornate gown, perhaps adorned with glittery beads or pearls, then toning down the earrings might be a good idea. The expression, "less is more" often rings true, as it serves as a reminder to keep the balance from going towards an overdone look. The flip side here, of course, is that a very simple wedding dress may come to life with more detailed and flashy earrings. Elaborate accessories can really put that finesse into a modest dress choice.

Of course the style of your wedding will also have an impact on your jewelry. Formal weddings call for more classic and traditional earring styles while modern-themed weddings do not.

Wedding earrings will allow you to incorporate your own taste and expression to accent your overall wedding look. Whether you choose small diamond studs or colorful chandelier earrings, remember that everyone will have a rule or piece of advice to lend. The correct choice will ultimately be what makes you feel good and what you think is beautiful. That, in and of itself, will guarantee the right look!
