Colored diamonds, also referred to as fancy cut diamonds, are far less common than colorless diamonds. Because of this, colored diamonds are often much more expensive than their traditional counterparts. And one of the most expensive and rare of them all is the pink diamond. They are so rare that you usually can't just go down to your neighborhood jeweler and pick one up. Many jewelers will never have a natural pink diamond wedding ring available.
Some women may want a pink diamond engagement ring because it's a rarity, but pink diamonds are also truly beautiful. The brilliance and pink sparkles are an unexpected and welcome change from the diamond rings we see every day. The woman who craves a pink diamond ring knows what she wants, and she knows that only the best will do.
If you are lucky enough to be able to afford a pink diamond engagement ring, how do you choose the best diamond? First of all, know that selecting a colored diamond is slightly different than a more traditional diamond. For more information, see 4 Cs of Diamonds. Colored diamonds are graded by their hue (or basic color) and intensity of color (basically how much color is present in the diamond), as opposed to their lack of color.
Cut is extremely important in pink diamonds and a bad cut is a deal breaker. But clarity is not as crucial, just be sure the diamond is free from obvious inclusions that alter the overall look of the diamond. You should pay most attention to the intensity of color.
Now, Jennifer Lopez may have been presented with a stunningly beautiful (and huge!) pink diamond engagement ring by Ben Affleck, but we are not all so lucky (ignoring for a minute that the wedding never took place) to be dating movie stars with gigantic bank accounts. So, what is the average woman to do if she has her heart set on a pink diamond wedding ring but her budget just does not allow for it? She may want to consider a pink sapphire engagement ring or a ring that showcases both pink diamonds and pink sapphires.
Pink sapphire rings are much more affordable than pink diamonds. Sapphires are very pretty and durable gemstones - only diamonds are harder - which makes them ideal for engagement rings. Some women may choose to have a small pink diamond surrounded by the less expensive pink sapphires. This would create the beautiful pink hue they desire without the huge price tag. Pink sapphires also look beautiful surrounded by white diamonds.
The woman fortunate enough to receive a gorgeous pink diamond engagement ring will spend the rest of her life gazing down in awe at the most beautiful piece of jewelry she has ever seen. And she will realize that the expense was well worth it.
