Marquise Diamond Ring

A guide to choosing your beloved's marquise diamond ring for your engagement.

When a couple decides to marry, the engagement ring is often the first and most significant purchase to signify their coming union. The choice of styles is endless but if your bride-to-be is a queen in your eyes, perhaps the marquise cut is the one which will best express your feelings.

For that royal touch in engagement rings, the elegance of the marquise diamond ring make it the de facto choice. About twice as long as it is wide, the marquise cut tapers to graceful points on each end, which accentuates the size of any diamond.

The perfect length to width ratio for a marquise diamond engagement ring stone is approximately 2 to 1. This aspect should be considered when purchasing a marquise cut diamond because the ratio makes the difference in how the diamond gathers and refracts light. Proper proportions contribute to the fiery brilliance of the diamond and if not cut precisely, there could appear a darker "bow tie" in the center of the diamond where there is a noticeable lack of brilliance.

As either a classic solitaire setting or surrounded by other smaller diamonds or gemstones, the marquise diamond ring is unsurpassed for elegance and style. The marquise has a large surface area for the size of the carat weight and the elongated, graceful lines of this cut can enhance even a smaller diamond and make it look larger. As such, it's possible to purchase a somewhat smaller stone and still have the illusion of a larger carat weight diamond in your ring.

If you and your future bride have tried many different cuts and settings of diamond engagement ring, you may notice that the marquise cut flatters the hand, making the fingers look longer and more slender. Perhaps this contributes to its lure as the style of royalty.

As any couple who is shopping for an engagement ring knows, the cuts are as individual as any bride. Called a "fancy" cut, the classic marquise speaks of style and refinement.

For today's celebrity, the larger the diamond the more fashionable it is and many couples opt for the sophisticated marquise cut diamond for their engagement rings. Before their million-dollar wedding, actor Michael Douglas gave Catherine Zeta-Jones an antique-style 10-carat marquise diamond to celebrate their union.

The second largest diamond ever found, the 971-carat Excelsior, was discovered in a South African mine in 1893. This blue-white gemstone, because of its irregular shape, was cut into 21 different polished stones, the largest of which was a 69.80 carat marquise cut. A smaller 18-carat marquise cut diamond from the Excelsior was also displayed at the 1939 Word's Fair.

Every little girl dreams of fairy tale romance and living happily ever after. She looks ahead to the time when her prince charming will sweep her up and carry her away. If your future bride is a princess who only deserves the best, the chic Marquise diamond engagement ring is sure to make her feel like royalty.
