You and your future spouse have looked at gold rings, white gold rings, even platinum rings, but they just aren't right. You're looking for something a little different, something creative that people don't see everyday. You start to wonder: will you ever find the perfect ring? The ideal ring for you might just be a titanium engagement ring.

What is titanium? Isn't that the metal that space shuttles are made of? Can you really purchase an engagement ring that is made from titanium? In a word, yes. Titanium engagement rings are extremely durable, strong, and surprising beautiful. And for the woman looking for something a little out of the ordinary, titanium may be just the ticket.

Titanium is a metallic gray element that is used to make a variety of things, including eyeglasses, watches, bicycle frames, artificial joints, airplanes, and many others. Titanium comes in different grades: basic-grade titanium is 98-99% pure titanium. Aircraft-grade titanium contains 90% titanium, 6% aluminum, and 4% vanadium. Extra-hard titanium contains 86% titanium, 6% aluminum, 6% vanadium, and 2% tin. So which grade is the best for rings? Aircraft-grade titanium is considerably stronger than basic-grade, with extra-hard titanium being stronger still. For a ring that will last forever, most jewelers recommend aircraft-grade or extra-hard titanium.

Titanium engagement rings can have a variety of finishes to suit any taste including polished, which is very shiny and brilliant, matte, satin, or frost (scratches are difficult to see on this finish). The rings have an almost silver appearance, but can be colored if you so desire. If you've always wanted a purple or blue engagement ring (hey, that would cover the "something blue" at your wedding!) you have come to the right place. Titanium rings can also be inlayed with diamonds or other gemstones, or gold or platinum bands to create a unique and beautiful ring.

If budget is your determining factor when purchasing an engagement ring, a titanium ring may be for you. Many titanium rings are less expensive than even a 10K white gold ring, however, some jewelers charge more for titanium rings because they are more difficult to make. Titanium is such a hard metal that it can break jewelry-making machines and is often hand-crafted. Another note: it is very difficult to resize a titanium ring. Make sure you purchase the correct size the first time, because if you have to size the ring down you may be charged a hefty fee.

Titanium engagement rings may not be as popular as gold or platinum rings, but they are a wonderful choice for many women. The rings are lightweight and 100% hypo-allergenic, making them perfect for women with sensitive skin. Titanium will not wear down over the years, unlike some gold rings. While titanium rings may become scratched with everyday wear, a jeweler can easily polish them to their former glory.

Non-traditional and often simple titanium engagement rings will be perfect for the woman searching for a ring that is unconventional.
