Many couples choose to set it aside the top tier of their wedding cake in a wedding cake box to freeze and eat the cake a year later at home on their first anniversary. Others may wish to bring leftover cake in a wedding cake card box to friends and relatives who weren't able to attend the reception, or even to send some home in a wedding cake box with a guest.
If you have any of these plans in mind, you will need a suitable wedding cake box to use as storage. What's available? What works best? Does a wedding cake card box have to be boring?
Wedding favor boxes for cake slices, sized for individual pieces of cake, come in virtually every color and pattern. These are usually made of cardboard with a food-safe coating on the inside to prevent leaks. You can get clear wedding cake boxes, too, or boxes in "frosted" colors, made from acetate. Shapes vary. The most common is rectangular, but you can also find them square, or made like the boxes Chinese restaurants use for take-out, complete with a metal handle. Most wedding favor boxes for cake slices are fairly basic in design, but you can find them with inner flaps edged in a fancy shape, or with cutouts to mimic lace.
You can also dress up a plain-Jane wedding cake box in the size of your choice to make it uniquely yours. A pretty ribbon is a must. Be sure to cut enough to make a generous bow. Have whoever will be packing the slices practice tying ahead of time, since these bows will be tied on the spot. Attach a tag with each ribbon, inscribed with your names and wedding date. You can make these yourself from heavy card stock cut in shapes and decorated to match your theme. If your theme is angels, for instance, cut cloud shapes decorated with clip-art harps or cherubs. Or find pre-made stickers that suggest your theme, and adhere them to the wedding cake card box.
Some boxes come preassembled, but you can often save money by buying them flat and assembling them yourself. If you order cake boxes by mail, expect to do the assembly. When you search online for a wedding cake box, you'll find interesting boxes made for other purposes, too. Some of these will work fine for cake. But look out for boxes not made specifically for moist foods. An oily stain could work its way through the bottom and ruin someone's best clothes.
For the top tier of your cake, you'll want a wedding cake box that is more protective. Special freezer boxes are available in decorative designs. These are usually not large, so make sure before ordering that the top of your cake will fit inside. The box will come with an air-tight inner liner designed to protect your cake against freezer burn. When it comes time to revive the saved cake, loosen the wrap and let it thaw overnight in the refrigerator. Sometimes the icing will come loose when a cake is thawed, so if appearance will be important, you may need to re-ice your wedding cake top.
Look around and you'll find just the right wedding cake box. Your guests will "have their cake and eat it, too," and you and your new spouse will enjoy a tasty replay of that special day when you became one.
