Paper Choices for Invitations

Choosing the Perfect Paper for Your Wedding Invitations

wedding paper
Whether making your wedding invitations yourself, or having them professionally done, choosing the right paper is an important decision in the invitation process. Paper choices can range from casual and affordable to formal and expensive. Let's begin with paper for a more casual or informal invitation.

An environmentally-conscious way to go is with recycled paper. Not all recycled paper is brown and rogue-looking. The natural, torn look of some recycled paper can look quite stylish. And recycled paper comes in many colors.

Some paper makers will also sell recycled paper scraps by the bag, which are great for making your own invitations or embellishing professionally-made ones. Add ribbon or raffia to hand-made, recycled paper to add a touch of elegance. Companies who specialize in hand-made, recycled paper can be found online, and some craft stores carry a selection.

Cotton and linen paper are other options invitations. The benefit of cotton paper is its strength; it can last for years. 100 percent cotton paper is more expensive than a blend of recycled and cotton. Linen paper carries a very rich look, but is usually a bit more expensive than cotton.

For invitations that are a little more formal, consider vellum, parchment or textured paper.

Vellum is very popular, and is translucent paper that looks somewhat frosted in appearance. It adds a bit of romance and softens the invitation. Parchment paper is made from animal skins and has a brownish color. It is the most traditional form of paper; scrolls and royal announcements were written on parchment. There are many kinds of textured papers, from those with a glossy finish to woven textures and flower-embedded papers. For the most formal invitations, you can use 100 percent cotton, or look into Italian or Japanese handmade papers.

Traditionally, wedding invitations are printed on card stock. Tones of white, ecru or ivory are the most popular and traditional colors, although many couples are choosing non-traditional colors these days. There are many ways to decorate paper too, using things like dried flowers, paint, stamps, ribbon, raffia and other materials you can find at craft and scrapbooking stores.

If you are purchasing your invitations or paper online, it's a good idea to visit a stationary store before ordering to view and feel the different types of paper before you make a decision.

Whatever paper you choose, go with the best quality that you can afford. It's the first thing your guests will see representing your wedding. You are setting the tone for the entire occasion.
