Destination Wedding Invitation Guide

Outdoor Wedding Reception ideas
Planning a destination wedding can be a big undertaking, but creating the perfect invitations for your special day doesn't have to be a chore. With printable DIY wedding invitation templates, it's easy to create customized invitations that suit your particular needs.

General Etiquette Tips for Destination Wedding Invitations

A destination wedding presents some special etiquette issues when creating your invitations. Consider the following tips to help the process go more smoothly.

  • Send your wedding invitations at least 10 weeks before the event. Include details regarding travel arrangements in the invitation enclosures or direct guests to your wedding website.
  • It's common for couples to forgo gifts when hosting a destination wedding, as traveling to the event can be quite expensive for guests. If this is the approach you wish to take, consider adding the phrase "The honor of your presence is the only gift we require” to your invitations or your wedding website. Otherwise, it's a good idea to include an appropriate mailing address for cards and gifts so you don't need to worry about transporting these items home after the wedding.
  • Including children in your destination wedding is generally recommended, due to the difficulty parents will have arranging childcare for this type of event. However, you are not required to invite children if you do not wish to do so. If your wedding is for adults-only, address your invitation to the adults in the household by name. Indicate on your website that no babysitting services or activities will be provided during the event.
  • For planning purposes, add a clear reply-by date to your RSVP cards. The reply-by date should be a few weeks after your invitations are sent out to allow guests time to finalize their arrangements.
  • Many couples have a second reception a few weeks after they return from their honeymoon to celebrate with extended family and friends. If you wish to have a smaller second reception, these invitations can be mailed out separately after you’ve finalized the details.
