Wedding Gift Registries

Give the Special Couple Exactly What They Need

wedding gifts
Most of us, at one time or another, have agonized over what gift to purchase for a special occasion. Factoring in pricing and trying to avoid repetition (in addition to simply choosing a gift that will be enjoyed) can add up to stress. Wedding gifts are no exception. It can be difficult to know just what the couple wants and how many of that item they may receive. The wedding gift registry takes the guesswork out of gift giving. It provides a detailed list of what the couple really wants, really likes, and at what cost.

What Is a Gift Registry?
The wedding gift registry is a computerized list generated by the store (or stores) that details specific gift items that the couple has selected. As an item is selected for purchase, it is flagged and deleted from the list, thus avoiding any chance of gift duplication. It is practical and meaningful, as it will allow the wedding couple to receive exactly what they want, like, and need.

Most stores will allow a couple to register up to a year and a half in advance of their designated wedding date. This gives guests plenty of time to choose a gift and will allow them to send that gift well in advance of the wedding. Sending gifts to the couple's home before the wedding prevents the awkwardness of the couple trying to transport a stack of gifts home on their actual wedding day. It also reduces the chance of loss or damage that may incur with a stack of gifts at a reception. Additionally, most stores will keep gift registries open for a year after the wedding has taken place. This allows remaining gifts to be given for the first anniversary.

Multiple Stores and a Broad Range of Prices are Best
Couples choosing to participate in a wedding gift registry should consider registering at two or more stores and incorporating a broad price range so that guests can feel comfortable about their choices. Don't be shy about creating lists of items you love from stores that you love. That's the point of the registry -- your guests will be glad to have choices! It might be worthwhile to ask the store(s) how often they update the registry lists, whether or not they have a toll free number for people who may have questions about specific items, if they have active and friendly websites, and what their return policy is.

Think Beyond Traditional Gifts
Remember that wedding gift registry ideas can extend far beyond the standard flatware, dinnerware, stemware, linens, knives, pots, pans, and small appliances that often detail such lists. Registry ideas can include camping gear, theater tickets, and even spa treatments. In fact, a recent trend in gift giving registries is to create a honeymoon registry that will collect contributions to help send a couple to their dream location. Or for couples who are well established and really have what they want and need, consider setting up a charity registry. Guests can contribute to a meaningful cause in honor of your wedding.

If you are a wedding guest, remember that though it's great to have the gift registry option, you don't have to select a gift that way. Spend what's right for you and give a gift that's right for you, too. Some people prefer to choose their own surprise gift -- others are grateful to have suggestions to choose from. Above all, wedding gifts are our way to rejoice with the couple, to present them with a show of support, recognition, and celebration.
