Irish Wedding Gifts

Bringing the Emerald Isle's Sensibility to Your Gift-Giving Decisions

An Irish Wedding is a joyous celebration of culture, history, and happiness, as two newlyweds unite in the long, glorious traditions of the emerald isle. Finding the perfect Irish wedding gift can be a challenging prospect, though -- a shamrock seems too little...a honeymoon to Ireland seems too much. How do you find the right gift with an Irish theme?

Gifts Inspired By Ireland and All Things Irish
The first place you might search when looking for a great Irish wedding gift might be things which are decorated in an Irish style or adorned with pictures of the Irish landscape, such as lovely watercolor prints of cottages and castles for the married couple to hang in their new home. For couples of an earthier sort, consider the gift of Guinness barware or glassware. High-end single malt Irish Whiskey (such as Bushmills or Cooleys) can also make for a smooth-drinking wedding gift. The name "whiskey" comes from the Gaeli "uisce beatha", which translates as "water of life", making the gift symbolically appropriate to the start of two lovers' new lives together!

Think About Irish Symbols
Shamrocks are the most commonly thought of symbol of Ireland, and can make for outstanding themed wedding gifts, but there are lots of other Celtic symbols which may make for gifts that are more meaningful and unique. Celtic knots (signifying eternal love) and cross (signifying peace and love) are striking figures which make for gorgeous decorative elements on everything from pendants to plates and serving platters to champagne flutes. You might also consider Irish coins or Saint medallions as an inspiration for jewelry choices.

Claddagh (an Irish symbol of love and friendship, seen above) symbols may be inscribed on or incorporated into many household items, from tea kettles to sconces. Many companies offer flatware, bowls, vases, stemware, and crystal with this lovely, meaningful pattern. The claddagh icon is also often seen on marriage bells, rung by the bride and groom to commemorate their union. Votive candles with claddagh holders might make great parting gifts to guests or to the bridal party.

What's the History?
Finally, especially if the gift is for a family wedding, consider doing some in-depth research into the history of the respective families' names. Many families of true Irish descent have long, checkered, and extremely interesting histories, which might be perfect for a family tree. You might also consider commissioning a beautiful wall-hanging or painting of the family crest to hang in the newlyweds home. There are even companies that combine both the history of the family name and their coat of arms into what's known as an armorial history an informative and elegant presentation of the past that has brought these two special people together.

What About Travel?
For those with means, a trip to Ireland as a wedding present is certainly not out of the question. Newlyweds could travel to the homes of the ancestors, taking in the rolling green hills, foggy moors, and welcoming brewpubs and taverns dotting the Irish landscape. The peak season for travel is July through August, which sees the warmest weather and a number of colorful local festivals. Keep in mind that many bed & breakfasts shut down from October to April during the country's wet, cold winter.

Finding the perfect Irish wedding gift might be as easy as picking up a few shamrock candles or as complicated as a fully-researched family tree, but the truth is that nearly anything can work as an Irish wedding gift, given a few Irish symbols or a bit of whiskey on the side!
