Wine was a "necessity of life" for Thomas Jefferson and he was not alone in his adage. Wine and weddings date as far back as the Biblical wedding feast at Cana. If you and your guests love wine, here's an idea they're sure to enjoy that won't put a huge dent in your pocketbook: wine wedding favors.

It's traditional to toast the bride and groom at their wedding reception and drink to a happy and long-lasting marriage. Now the bride and groom can toast their guests with a personalized wine bottle. Select a label that coincides with your wedding theme or customize bottles for each member of your wedding party. Custom wine bottle wedding favors compliment any gift basket or stand elegantly alone next to place settings at the reception table.

One option is to customize the labels on champagne splits with a label you and your fiance create together. This way, your guests can make their toast to you from wine bottle wedding favors made especially for them - one they can then save as a memento of your special day. The empty bottles make great vases for fresh, dried, or silk flowers and add a nice touch when placed next to framed photos of the wedding.

You can create your own label by scanning a favorite photo or using stock photos of wedding clip art. Simply add text in a font style and size of your choice, and you've made your guests something they can not only enjoy in the moment, but also bring home with them and put to good use.

Not sure what to write on the label? You may want to choose a phrase or two from your vows, lyrics from your favorite song, a famous quote, or a poem that speaks to your heart for your personalized wine bottle wedding favors.

Be sure to include the date (month, day, and year) of the wedding. When selecting your label stock, choose labels that are large enough to cover the existing label on the wine bottle. If you don't want to make your own labels, there are various distributors who will custom create labels for you and affix them to the wine bottles before shipping.

To compliment the custom wine bottles and continue with your wine wedding favor theme, add a few simple items, place them in a basket with shredded raffia, wrap with cellophane, and tie with sheer organza ribbon in the colors of your wedding.

There's no limit to what you can include in your wine gift basket - wine goes with everything. Here are a few ideas for complimentary wine wedding favors.
  • Wine glasses - a pair of which is all you need. They serve as a nice accent, can be purchased by the case fairly inexpensively, and can be personalized (though is not necessary) with a simple glass etching kit sold in most craft stores.
  • Wine glass charms - these fashionable favors make excellent gifts for your guests who like to entertain. And, chances are, if you like wine, you like to entertain. The idea behind wine glass charms is so party guests will be able to tell which glass is theirs when setting it down among other guests' glasses. Making your own wine glass charms is easy and inexpensive and can be customized to fit the individual tastes of each guest or member of the wedding party. Put one charm ring on each glass or include as a full set (6 - 12).
  • Wine stoppers - stainless steel, pewter, or wooden wine stoppers accentuate your custom wine bottle and can most likely be found in styles that complement your wedding theme.
  • Picture frames - finding a picture frame that matches the wine stopper not only looks great in the basket, but will also give your guest a place to put their favorite wedding photo (next to the empty wine bottle vase).
  • Wine opener - elegant waiters' wine openers can be purchased in bulk and inscribed with a personal message, your guests' names, your names, and date of the wedding.

Cheers!
