Matchbook Wedding Favors

Matchbooks Work Well for Classy Wedding Favors for Your Guests

Are you looking for a favor that's traditional, useful and decorative? Try wedding match books. These inexpensive and versatile favors are a great addition to any wedding reception.

Match books can usually be personalized with any text you'd like, though space is limited as to how much you can say. "Mary and Bill -- a Perfect Match" with the wedding date is probably plenty.

Usually, match book text is printed in foil, though matte (non-shiny) print is available through certain vendors. Pick colors that match your general wedding color scheme. Be careful of the colors you select for the foil and background. These should be different enough that the two don't "blend together," making the words difficult to read.

Choose Your Shape
Matches can be contained in any one of a variety of holders. A few possibilities are:
  • Box matches: these have a "drawer" that pulls out, revealing the matches inside.
  • Book matches: the standard flip-top holder.
  • Barrels: classy and elegant cylinders.
  • Short: a unique, square look.
Decide what shape you'd like and make your choices from there. This will significantly cut down on the time you would otherwise spend muddling through the literally hundreds of possibilities through store and online vendors.

Not Just for Lighting
Match books can fill a variety of functions at your wedding. They're helpful to smokers who must run outside at a non-smoking venue, and they can be used to re-light candles at the tables that have gone out. But personalized match books perform many more functions than that. Try the following ideas at your wedding reception.

At the Bar
Personalized match books can be left at the bar to be used immediately by guests, or to be picked up as mementos. Be sure to order enough to allow a book or two per guest.

As Place Cards
Match books also make eye-catching place cards. Be aware that this is a little more complex and will be more expensive than having an entire batch printed with the same text. This idea works best for a smaller wedding (fifty or fewer guests).

On the Table
If you're planning on having lit candles on your guests' tables, have a few personalized match books waiting. Guests can light their own candles for a little added ambiance.

"Matchbook"-look Note Pads
More and more wedding receptions are non-smoking. Health conscious guests will appreciate small note pads that close like match book covers. The cover can be opened and individual pages pulled out for quick and easy notations. These fit easily into a purse or a gentleman's wallet and make a practical and decorative wedding favor.

Sweet Treats Another sweet idea for non-smokers is to fill drawer-style match boxes with mints or other small candies. These will also be a big hit with children, if you are inviting minors to your wedding reception.

Whatever you decide, be sure to keep a few books or boxes for yourself. Keep them in a special memories box with other items, such as your wedding garter, your wedding guest book pen and other fond mementos of your special day.
