Planning Your Wedding Budget

Making Sure Your Special Day Doesn't Break the Bank

You've probably dreamed of your wedding for years...maybe you envisioned yourself in a sweeping white dress glittering with tiny beads, dancing at a wedding wreathed with every bell and whistle imaginable. However, when it comes time to actually plan your wedding, it is recommended that you set a budget and stick to it. A wedding budget will help guide you through your personal priorities so that you can create an exceptional yet affordable day.

Weddings can easily run in excess of $20,000. Many will cost a great deal more, but with careful, detailed planning, they can also cost much less. Remember that step one is to set your wedding budget. Step two is to create a priority list of those things you must have at your wedding. Sit down with your spouse-to-be and realize that you may have some differing ideas. With a little patience and understanding, however, you'll be sure to create a list of honed priorities in addition to a list of things you both can live without. Remember that your wedding is what you want it to be and should not be based on the preconceived notions of others.

A wedding budget planner will help you to categorize exactly what you need at your wedding along with recommended payment percentages. This should be used as a guideline. Nothing is set in stone. For example, a sample wedding budget planner might start with a simple list of each service, amenity, or item you will need to purchase. The list might include:
  • Ceremony
  • Reception
  • Attire
  • Jewelry
  • Floral
  • Music
  • Photographer
  • Transportation
  • Paper goods
  • Gifts

  • As you research each item and make your decisions, you can check the actual percentage you will need to pay against the recommended percentage. If your cost seems too high, look for alternative ways to save money.

Free sample wedding budget planners are available online, in wedding magazines and in books (which can be borrowed from your local library). You may find a planner that looks ideal for your personal requirements, or you might prefer to use the available planners as archetypes from which you can create your own finely-honed version. At any rate, a detailed list on paper, complete with prices, will help you to stay on top of your finances.

There are always ways to stay within your wedding budget if you plan ahead and think out of the box. Consider having your celebration at home, at a beach, or a park during the off-season. Borrow a wedding gown and look for online wedding coupons. Select a cake without expensive filling, and don't be afraid to ask questions and negotiate with vendors.

Wedding budgets are an integral part of wedding planning. In addition to keeping clear records of the costs, they will help you to determine what you want most. Remember that each little cost-cutting tactic will become a part of the larger savings. Prioritize, let your budget guide you and enjoy a selection process that will ultimately lead you to that day of your dreams!
