The detail of this type of art is reminiscent of painting, but has a smooth, fantastical flow with more texture than a painting.
One way to make use of encaustic wax on invitations is to have the invitations printed first, making sure you leave room on each one for a wax design, either in the form of a border or central image.
Step 1
Start by applying a clear wax (which will dilute the hue of the colored wax) onto the hot iron.
Step 2
Then, apply the colored wax, making sure to note that the wax pattern you create on the iron will be the same pattern that ends up on your paper.
Step 3
Next, run the iron across the paper, creating a streaky design. If you put an ink stamp on the paper before this step, the encaustic supply wax will create a background color that accents the stamp. With practice you can manipulate the melted encaustic wax application and actually create designs with the iron using different colors of wax. Application of various amounts of pressure in different spots, as well as different colors of encaustic wax, can be used to create a landscape and many other designs.
