Maine Wedding Dance Instructors

Be ready for your Maine-based reception by enlisting the aid of a fabulous dance instructor.

The wedding hall, the invitations, the band, the dress. Just when you thought you'd considered everything you'll need for your big day, we're here to ask you one simple question: Have you thought about that first wedding reception dance?

Don't panic. If you're like most people, you've rarely (if ever) danced a waltz, and the box step sounds like some sort of warehouse device. And that's exactly what experienced wedding dance instructors are for. Whether you're a beginner or just need a brush-up, Maine has the dance instructor for you. Read on to know what to look for, and how to find him or her.

Dance Studios

The first and perhaps best place to look is at a well-known dance studio. Find out how long the studio has been open, what the instructor's credentials are and what types of dance are taught there. A dance studio that's professional and on the level will have no problem listing its instructors and their credentials. You can also ask to sit in on a dance session, but do ask in advance; students may be self-conscious, and the teacher will probably want to get a feel for which group will be happy to have you there.

Look for a studio that seems to have frequent, well-attended classes; the best testament to an instructo's talents is how large a following he or she has. Try locations with a variety of classes, such as the Maine Ballroom in Portland, the Maplewood Dance Center, also in Portland or Gotta Dance 2 in Westbrook. Or you can do a general search for listings at sites such as Dancelessons.net.

Individual Lessons

Many dance instructors will also be willing to come to your home. Be aware, however, that this type of arrangement is usually much more expensive than attending a studio. However, for the time-pressed (or very shy), at-home instruction is a possibility. Some instructors also offer lessons out of their own homes, another option that may feel more private to a self-conscious bride- and groom-to-be.

You'll want to take a precaution or two before signing on with an at-home wedding dance instructor. Maine is a big state; make sure in advance of any mileage your instructor may charge for his or her travel. And don't contract a number of lessons before you've had your first one and are certain you, your groom and the instructor are a good combination.

What You Can Expect

Maine is a popular destination for weddings, as well as other formal events that warrant a scenic, interesting atmosphere. Most professional wedding dance instructors based in Maine should have a lessons itinerary suitable for any celebratory occasion. Your wedding dance instructor should be able to lead you in what dances to choose from; you should never feel he or she is waiting for you to come up with a plan. You should feel comfortable with your wedding dance instructor. If you don't, consider moving on.

You can learn the basics of a few wedding dances in just one two- to three-hour lesson, but for the practice and for a more well-rounded selection, try to arrange a three- or six-lesson plan. Packages are often less expensive per lesson, and if you opt to take your lessons along with other couples, you should find a price break as well.

The studio or dance area should be clean, with a smooth floor. Mirrors should be available with a full view of you and your groom from all angles. Your instructor should be friendly, informative and willing to stop and correct you or your groom (diplomatically, of course). Once you have the steps down, formal dancing can be very relaxing, and popular culture wedding dances such as line dancing and the Electric Slide will leave you breathless, laughing -- and glad you took a lesson or two. Relax and enjoy your lessons; they'll come in handy at your reception and any formal event you and your new spouse attend in the future.
