Alaska Wedding Cakes

Sweet slices of heaven for every Alaska reception.

Whether celebrating with a close-knit group or a large guest list, your wedding cake will be one of the centerpieces of your reception. Most brides choose to coordinate their cakes with their wedding theme or motif, and this is a great place to look for inspiration. Practical options include the classic cake with three-tiers of butter cream frosting, fondant wedding cakes, a cupcake wedding cake and more. With Alaska's fine assortment of bakeries, you are sure to find a pastry chef who is up to creating the cake you've always dreamed of!

Alaska Wedding Cake Ideas

Alaska's landscape, flora and fauna provide all the inspiration you could ever hope for when it comes to wedding cake design ideas. Native wildflowers and butter cream frosting is always a winning combination.

The many animals and birds found in and around Alaska might spur your imagination as well. They include moose, polar, grizzly, and black bears, caribou, bald eagles, willow ptarmigans, sled dogs or huskies and many others. Add their silhouettes to a 3-tier fondant wedding cake airbrushed to resemble the Alaskan sunrise or sunset, complete with wilderness, mountains, ocean or glaciers.

Another fun idea might include making the top tier of your cake an iceberg, and paint the lower levels shades of blue to represent the ocean. You can then add your favorite Alaskan sea creatures to the various tiers, including Orca whales and sea otters. Add a sea lion couple in tux and dress as a topper for an extremely cute and appropriate presentation.

If you are marrying in spring or summer, consider using wild native forget-me-nots (Alaska's state flower) to decorate your cake. These cheerful blue and yellow flowers will add sunshine to your special day, even if the Alaskan weather doesn't cooperate.

Local Alaska Wedding Bakeries

While grocery stores and restaurants may be able to make a wedding cake, your best bet for finding a specialty bakery will be in larger towns such as Juneau, Fairbanks and Anchorage. A few notable bakers are also scattered across the state's small towns. Most shops will also serve many of their surrounding communities. Alaska bakeries include:
  • Alaska Cakesations of Anchorage specializes in creative cakes with an eye toward elegance and fun. Schedule a creating consultation to find the point where "flavor meets art."
  • Superstar Pastry Designs is another imaginative Anchorage option for wedding cake design. Fondant, butter cream, novelty, mini-cakes and more are made to order, and recipes can easily be matched to your own palate with a tasting session by appointment.
  • In the small town of Wasilla, Indigo Desserts has been creating some of Alaska's finest wedding confections, which you can browse through in their large website photo gallery.
  • A relatively recent addition to the Anchorage Bakery scene is Simply Sweet Cake Design, a shop which can work from your drawing to create a masterpiece, or inject their own considerable flair and design into a cake based on your wedding colors or theme. From funky and retro to elegant and modern, this little shop delivers!
  • For the past 15 years, Two Sisters Bakery in Homer, has been making sweet treats with a focus on using fresh, local ingredients whenever possible. Their classically-styled wedding creations often feature fresh flowers and traditional butter cream frosting.

Scheduling Your Tasting Appointment

After you have found a couple of bakers who you think might be the "one" to make your special cake, call or contact them by email. If you leave a message, note how they respond to your inquiry -- a prompt reply may signal that they are on the ball, and will be able to successfully deliver at your wedding. Schedule your appointment at least a month in advance of your wedding, keeping in mind that the summer wedding months of June and July see the greatest demand for specialty cake makers' services. You will want to have a rough estimate of how many guests will be attending when you arrive at your appointment.

Questions to Ask Your Baker

At your tasting appointment, take the opportunity to thoroughly explore your cake maker's experience, style, design sense, and reputation by asking for referrals from past satisfied customers. Be sure to inquire about any setup and delivery fees, and make sure that they can make a cake large enough to accommodate your guest list. Many bakeries can serve larger groups if sheet cakes are ordered in addition to the showpiece wedding cake.

What Flavor Is Right for My Wedding?

The flavor you choose is totally up to you! Think about your guests and what they might like, but remember that this is your special day, too. At your tasting, ask for a list of their cakes, so you can make notes as you try each one. Flavors might include traditional favorites like classic white cake or red velvet, but don't be shy about venturing into new territory. In recent years, flavors such as spice, carrot cake, champagne, lemon poppy seed and others have been paired with new filling choices like raspberry and delectable coffee cream cheese. Try a lemon poppy seed/raspberry combination for a delightful spring or summer wedding treat. Many options will be available for frosting, as well -- think about rich chocolate or ganache for a warming bite at a fall or winter wedding!
