Beauty services for your wedding day in Alaska

Bridal makeup and hair are done the day of your wedding before you put your gown on. Other services to prep and primp, such as massages, facials and waxes, should be done before your wedding day. While Alaska is a sparsely populated state, many of the larger cities such as Anchorage and Juneau have numerous options for wedding beauty services. You deserve to look and feel amazing after all of the preparations! Remember to schedule your services as far in advance as possible, and try to fit in a "practice run" before your actual wedding day. Also, it never hurts to bring your own makeup and products along just in case!

Alaska Wedding Beauticians

When looking for a beauty specialist for your wedding day, consider your location and budget carefully. With Alaska's sprawling regions, proximity is a key component when timing your big day. Always inquire about fees for travel if you hire a traveling beautician. Some beauticians in Alaska will not travel to the more rugged areas, while others are provided by the hotel or resort where you are staying or holding your event. If you have already chosen your location, ask about spa services and local recommendations. Rushing from a salon to your ceremony might not be very relaxing on your wedding day, and many brides opt for an in-house specialist to prepare them in their dressing room a couple of hours before the ceremony. If you are to marry indoors, many places will have a dressing room where your beautician will prepare your hair and makeup.

When searching for a beautician, do not rule out salons or resorts. Some of these established experts are available for "house-calls" and can come to you with enough preparation time.

Your Wedding Hair Style

Alaska is known for its rugged, shaggy beauty, but your hair does not need to match! Your options are literally endless, as hair extensions are becoming less expensive in rural areas. If you have a certain style in mind, print out a picture for your stylist ahead of time. If you have the time and are nearby, consider asking them to practice the style on you before your wedding day. This will ensure that you are both on the same page regarding curls, angles, amounts of hairspray and placement of your adornments. Your stylist should "know your hair" and be prepared to bring necessary soothers, irons, conditioners, etc., so that you are not displeased with your coiffure on your wedding day.

Most stylists will have a portfolio to look at. Experts will be able to show a wide variety of hairstyles displaying their talent, from tight curls to long waves. If the portfolio contains a look you want to model, there's a good chance that the stylist will do it to your satisfaction. If you do not see a style that suits you, it might be a sign that the stylist will be experimenting and needs practice before your wedding day.

Your Wedding Makeup

Makeup comes in all colors, textures and tones. If you have specific skin-care needs, such as avoiding products containing talc, be upfront with your makeup artist ahead of time so that he or she can prepare. Trusting the artist to bring the perfect colors and creams with her on your wedding day can result in disaster (or even an allergic reaction). Consider the following in choosing an artist:
  • What product line(s) do they use? Is there a product you should supply?
  • How heavy or light do you like your makeup?
  • Do they have a makeup portfolio you can see?
  • What facial features would you like enhanced or hidden for photos and videos?
  • Will they be available for touch-ups after your ceremony? Many brides find themselves in blissful tears as they exchange vows.
  • Are they able to do a pre-session demonstration to make sure your skin tones and sensitivities are known ahead of time?
  • Can they be there on time, and do they have references?
If you are planning on tanning before your wedding, make sure they know this and can bring the appropriate color combination for a flawless look. For reddish undertones in the skin, the base colors will need careful consideration so as not to ignore your natural blush. For yellow undertones, a neutralizer will be needed to bring out colors.

Alaska Spa Services

In-house spa services are common in many of Alaska's sumptuous retreats, lodges and chalets. If your location offers spa services, it might be best to get these done the day before the ceremony. Depending on your personal experience with the services, leave time for swelling or redness to fade (as with waxing, plucking, etc) before beginning your hair and makeup. The following wedding-preparation spa services are offered in many locales, on-site and off-site, and prices should be asked about ahead of time:
  • Full body massages and scrubs
  • Body buffs and polishes
  • Essential oil wraps and treatments
  • Bikini, leg, eyebrow or upper-lip waxing
  • Facials
  • Steam-room sessions
  • Tanning (spray or bed)
  • Pedicure and manicure
You may need to travel to get some of these services done, as Alaska is not always a "one-stop-shop" state. Try to time your services so that you get the best results. Your beautician should be able to help you with this. Two or three days might be required depending on your needs, so be sure to bring a calendar, talk to each professional about your concerns and needs, and plan ahead!
