Best Destination Honeymoon in Mauritius

Five hundred sixty miles to the east of Madagascar, washed by the warm, blue water of the Indian Ocean lays a tiny island nation of immense beauty and undeniable charm.

Just north of the Tropic of Capricorn, the Republic of Mauritius is a tropical paradise that's long been a well-kept secret of wealthy European travelers, but in recent years has become a popular and affordable destination for other Western honeymooners, as well. With world class white sand beaches, beautiful coral reefs, shimmering waterfalls, and cozily romantic accommodations, Mauritius may be the perfect honeymoon destination for which the two of you have been searching.

Mauritius History and Culture
Though known to Arab and Muslim sea traders over one thousand years ago, Mauritius and its surrounding islands were first colonized in the 17th century by the Dutch, who named the land for their prince, Maurice of Nassau. The island was later controlled by the French and British, and eventually gained its independence in 1968. In 1992, it officially became a republic of the British Commonwealth. Because of its colonizers and its location, Mauritius is an intriguing mix of cultures, with English and French being its official languages, and a colorful dialect of Creole serving as a lingua franca for its populations. This diversity is also apparent in the island's cuisine, which is a delectable fusion of Desi, Creole, Chinese, and European cooking techniques and ingredients, with fresh seafood being a major staple of the diet. So many spices and wild flavors - you'll find your palettes dancing!

Mauritius Geography
Formed over eight million years ago by undersea volcanic eruptions, the island of Mauritius was created as the result of a geologic "hotspot", in a similar fashion to the way that other island paradises like Hawaii were created. As a result, the landscape, about the size of Rhode Island, is home to incredible formations of dark rock and a delightful variety of flora and fauna, many of which are not found anywhere else on earth. With a warm climate (winters, from May to December, average seventy-seven degrees Fahrenheit) and a long summer wet season, Mauritius supports extensive sugarcane and tea fields, which are some of the country's largest exports. The island is also surrounded by extensive atolls, which make for some breathtaking breakwaters and great scuba diving, where you can see kaleidoscopic tropical fish and colorful ecosystem of the barrier reefs.

What to See and Do in Mauritius
If you're looking for more than just a week of beachside relaxation with your honey, Mauritius has plenty to offer. Be sure to check out the town of Curepipe, which has a distinct English-market feel, and is home to the island's best shopping. The capital city of Port Louis is home to distinctive Muslim and Chinese neighborhoods, and has some great casinos, shops, bars, and restaurants at the Le Caudan Waterfront. For newlyweds in search of a romantic afternoon stroll, consider a trip to the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens, one of the country’s most popular destinations. Home to a great many species of palms and the giant Victoria Regia water lilies, this is a perfect place to wrap your arms around each other.

If you're in search of a bit more adventure and you've brought your hiking boots along, try Tamarin Falls, a deep, cool pool at the bottom of seven dazzling waterfalls. You'll dive, swim, and get romantic at this gorgeous secluded waterhole. The strenuous trail begins at the Tamarin Falls reservoir, but can be a little tricky to find - a local guide from the nearby town of Henrietta may be able to assist you.

Practical Mauritius Information
With an island climate, you'll want all the normal beach gear - t-shirts, shorts, linen, bathing suits, sandals, and plenty of sunscreen. If you're traveling in the winter months (May through December), a pair of pants and a light sweater are also good items to pack, as the nights are typically cool.

The country's international airport is located in the city of Mahébourg, on the opposite side of the island from Port Louis. Driving on the island can be an adventure, but, if you've got the gumption (and an international license), it's a great way to get around. Bus service is reliable but slow.

Traveler's checks and credit cards are widely accepted in Mauritius. Exchange rates vary, but are typically quite favorable to Western tourists. Those traveling to the country must have a passport and a return ticket, but no visas are required for stays of three months or less.

If you're looking for an island paradise at affordable prices, Mauritius is an ideal honeymoon destination. With beautiful beaches and reefs, a perfect climate, and wonderful hiking, gardens, and waterfalls, it's sure to be an unforgettable experience as the two of you take your first steps into married life!
