Fourth of July Wedding

Suggestions for your Fourth of July wedding celebration.

A Fourth of July wedding will really get the sparks flying! When planning your color scheme, you'll want to stick with red, white and blue. This could be a difficult color scheme to implement into things like attire and decorations.

Bridesmaids could wear dresses in a shade of light blue. Groomsmen could wear ties with stars and stripes on them. Or, for a patriotic twist, the entire wedding party could dress in traditional colonial wear.

An outdoor location is the best venue for a Fourth of July wedding. Most likely, you will have a more casual than formal reception, and this should be noted on your invitations. When sending out invitations, think about including art elements such as flags, stars and stripes, fireworks and torches. Make it clear to your guests that this is a Fourth of July wedding, and they should come prepared to enjoy a patriotic celebration.

Flowers of the season, in red, white and blue, may include roses, delphinium, daises and orchids. Ask your florist for flowers that are both in season and fit within your theme. Ordering flowers that are not in season can considerably add to the bill.

At the reception, you'll most likely want to display a large, American flag; preferably with a spotlight on it for after the sun sets. Plan to have your reception in a location where guests can easily view the town's fireworks display. For table decorations, you might use blue tablecloths with large white pillar candles wrapped in red ribbon. Napkins with stars and stripes on them could accessorize the table. Blue punch bowls could be filled with floating white and red flowers. For a rustic country look, fill large Mason jars with red, white and blue jellybeans.

Food at a Fourth of July wedding should be associated with summer picnic items. A barbecue can be spruced up by offering grilled salmon and shrimp. Side dishes should include berries (strawberries and blueberries to fit the color scheme), gourmet potato salad and a nice selection of pies and desserts. There's no need to provide a full bar; a tub filled with bottled beer on ice (think Sam Adams) and a nice selection of wine should do it. Have festive punch on hand for the kids.

When the fireworks are over, and the night is coming to a close, hand out sparklers to guests and gather for a final cheer to the newlyweds. A perfect end to a patriotic wedding!
